The National Park of Schinias Marathon is in Attica and is located 40km north-east from Athens and it is the most important coastal ecosystem in Attica.
The area includes a variety of habitats and wetlands which are unique for Attica and rare for Greece. In a relatively small area, the vegetation of sandy coasts, and the forest of P. pinea - P. halepensis, the vegetation of the wetlands (fresh and brackish waters) and the bushy vegetation of the surrounding hills coexist.
Thousands of visitors are attracted every year for pleasure (pleasure beaches, swimming, water sports), bird-watching and enjoying the scenery.
The environmental information that leads to the awareness of the public in issues such as management and protection of the environment is one of the main aims of the Management Authority.
Aiming to raise the awareness and participation of the public, the Management Authority accomplishes several activities. These activities concern presentations at schools, participation in world days, cleaning campaigns around the forest, etc.
The students are informed for the values of the wetlands in general and specifically for the importance of Wetland Schinias.
The education involves a presentation of the protected area, an instruction guide for the teachers and activity sheets. There are activities focused on field practice. Through this procedure the students learn the most significant aspects of the ecosystems and the surrounded area.
